Day 1: Kigali
Mwaramutse! This is how you will be welcomed upon arrival at Kigali Airport. You will be met by your local guide and transferred to the hotel. Rest an relax and enjoy dinner at the hotel. [D]
Day 2: Kigali, Huye, Nyanza, Nyungwe Forest
As soon as you leave Kigali, you will get to know authentic Rwanda. The country is extraordinarily green and bluish with eucalyptus trees, dark green cypress trees bordering the tracks and soft green rice fields at the bottom of the deep valleys. The road crosses the country at an average altitude of 4,920 feet. The inhabitants live here in a haven of peace. Further south, stop for lunch at Huye. In afternoon visit the Huye Museum houses, the finest ethnographic collection in Central Africa. You will visit the Royal Palace as well as the National Museum before continuing towards Nyungwe Forest for dinner and overnight. [B/L/D]
Day 3: Nyungwe Forest
Continue your trip to Rwanda through the forest trails and waterfalls of the Nyungwe Forest. Covering an area of 240,000 acres, this park is located between 5250 and 8,515 feet. With more than 200 different kinds of trees and more than 100 kinds of orchids, it is a unique habitat for 13 species of primates including baboons, L’Hoest monkey and the gray-cheeked mangabey. On foot under the thick tropical canopy, you will discover colobus monkeys which feed on delicious wild figs. All meal included and overnight at the lodge. [B/L/D]
Day 4: Nyungwe Forest, Lake Kivu (Kibuye)
In the morning, take the road to Kibuye. Located at an altitude of 4,790 feet, Lake Kivu is a magical place with the beauty of its banks and the lush vegetation that surrounds it. A good track, climbing to over 6,560 feet at times, runs along the lake and offers awe-inspiring views of the hundreds of islands that stand out against the shimmering surface. Lunch en-route. In the afternoon, pass through many traditional villages until arriving in Kibuye for dinner and overnight in a beautiful hotel on the lake shore. [B/L/D]
Days 5-6: Kibuye, Kinunu, Gisenyi (Congo Nile Ridge Trail)
The Congo Nile Trail runs along Lake Kivu (between the DRC and Rwanda at an altitude of 4,790 feet, the highest point during the journey is at 8,629 feet). This 2-day hike of relatively easy walking will be placed under the sign of meetings, smiles and friendships. In case of fatigue, the vehicle will never be very far! The first night will be in a lodge in Kinunu and the second on the shores of Lake Kivu in Gisenyi where you can swim. [B/L/D]
Day 7: Gisenyi, Bulera Lake, Volcanoes National Park
Departure for the Volcanoes National Park. En route you will visit the cultural village of Iby’iwacu. The inhabitants of this village perform the songs and dances of Intore, Ikinimba, Batwa and light the fire like their ancestors. You can also visit the house of the village’s king and throw traditional Batwa arrows. You also will meet a healer, observe the millet pounding on stone and watch the brewing of banana beer. Then, take the direction of the twin Bulera and Ruhondo Lakes. You will leave for a walk on a beautiful track that crosses several villages. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. [B/L/D]
Day 8: Volcanoes National Park (Gorilla trek)
The first light of dawn tears through the mists hanging from the peaks of Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyniyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. You are in the Volcanoes National Park, one of the most surprising places on this planet. With the help of your guide and trackers, you will set off in search of mountain gorillas. The male with the silver back can reach 550 pounds and a height of 5.6 feet. An intense moment to live awaits you! Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight. [B/L/D]
Day 9: Volcanoes National Park, Kigali (History of Rwanda)
After breakfast, you will take the road towards Kigali. In the afternoon, visit the Genocide Memorial, a place steeped in history and emotion. This visit is an opportunity to better understand what is today Rwanda. Night at the hotel. [B/L]
Days 10-11: Kigali, Akagera National Park
After breakfast head for Akagera National Park. On arrival set off for an unforgettable safari along landscapes of papyrus marshes, drained by a wide river. One of the most striking stages of your trip to Rwanda, these landscapes of rare beauty forming the Akagera Park, a reserve of around 250,000 hectares, a the natural habitat for buffaloes, zebras, elephants, elks, warthogs that live there alongside the many damaliscus, commonly known as tsessebes, and impalas and nearly 500 species of birds, including the elegant anhinga, the rare hoof-billed stork and the stealthy gonolek. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight. [B/L/D]
Day 12: Akagera, Kigali, USA
Go for a morning game drive then a boat trip on Lake Ihema. After lunch, take the road to Kigali International Airport to board your flight back home. “Mwirirwe”! See you soon! [B/L]

Health: Yellow fever inoculations are compulsory and malaria prophylactics are recommended. For gorilla/chimp trekking it is imperative that you are healthy and free of any disease or virus – officials do have the right to refuse entry if you are found to have or show any signs of communicable illnesses.
Visas: Most nationalities require a visa to enter Rwanda. The newly established EAC Visa allows entry into Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya for one fee of $100. Passports must be valid for a minimum of 6 months or 12 months in the case of UK nationals.
